The walls were originally built of white stone, but were rebuilt in the late fifteenth century the distinctive red brick. In the city there are four cathedrals (Assumption, Archangel, Annunciation, The Twelve Apostles), three palaces (the most important being the Patriarchal Palace), two major museums and of course the official residence of the president. Kutafia Tower entrance is on the south side of the palace.
